tacos and tequila!

What. A. Country.

It was a wish of mine for many years to visit Mexico. I finally got that chance this year.

First stop, Cancun. Now, I know what youre thinking.. tourist trap. And you’d be right. Many people say that Cancun is not the real Mexico and although this is true, it was still a nice experience. The jaw-dropping shades of blue water as well as the beaches are what makes the heavily humid climate tolerable. I mean, just look at these views! Spending time here with my family was the highlight of this city, as no way would have I enjoyed it without them.

Next came Oaxaca and man were we impressed! A much more local, humble and less-known travel spot in Mexico, also happened to be probably our favorite. The food in Oaxaca was fantastic – there were no misses! The culture was also something notable. the colors, the outfits, the mezcal, the different dishes.. made this city very memorable.  Due to the seismic activity here, all buildings are low-lying, which means three things; feeling of approachability, great views and accessible rooftops baby! We made a vow that we’d come back here one day. A daytrip to the Hierve el Agua where we explored the surroundings of and bathed in the ’petrified waterfalls’ was a great way to unwind.

A personal highlight for me was the food. The damn food. Wow. Ive loved Mexican food for a while and the closest I’ve come to good Mexican internationally was in the states. But boy, the food in Mexico itself is the real thing. So. Damn. Good. There was only one thing that I did not love.. and that was because it was cold. But everything else, I mean everything else was a banger. Standing on streets at Michelin starred Taquerias, ordering food that would vanish in two bites, was an experience I adored. Slapping on outrageous amounts of hot sauce – that burned from both ends – and trying anything local I could fit in my stomach, the food of this lovely country is to die for. Now, run that back and wash that down with a reposado (NOT BLANCO) mezcal or tequila.. ahh, bliss. Mexico, we’ll be back.

After that was Guadalajara. This was a city that we didn’t have much expectation of and that was probably a good thing. A much bigger city than the last, Guadalajara lacked that charm that we had gotten used to. The historic area of the city was pretty, with the Cathedral and other notable buildings well maintained. However, the rest of the city felt rather scattered. The highlight of this trip was the excursion to the countryside, where we visited the city of Tequilla and learned through a tour how this infamous drink is made. P.S, we got a little tipsy in the process.

Last but definitely not least was CDMX. This very large, creative, happening and exciting city was a great way to round out the trip. Bustling with people and traffic, we explored the different parts on different days. First came the shrine of Our lady of Guadalupe, then the historical area which had a lot of beautiful architecture and character, finally concluded by the bougie Condesa and it’s surroundings. we also caught a lucha mexican wrestling match - a crazy experience!
